Pre-college advising: “…grateful to you for your great advice”

For my high school families, I serve as a pre-college advisor for students and parents. I tell stories as a way of teaching without preaching. Parents of a high school junior wrote, “We continue to be grateful to you for your great advice as we figure out the next steps…”

College applications can be a stressful for the whole family. My work with students helps relieve the stress!

Looking forward to connecting with your family,
Michelle

Reflecting and looking ahead to the New Year

What a wonderful year of connecting with families for college applications. Here’s a bit of reflection on the ‘old’ year, and a request as we head into the New Year.

2013 may be remembered as ‘the year when they updated the Common Application’ – oh boy! How interesting to be interviewed by a New York Times reporter for a story on the Common App. Though my name did not appear in the article, I appreciated the reporter researching experiences of many students across the country: http://www.nytimes.com/2013/10/13/education/online-application-woes-make-students-anxious-and-put-colleges-behind-schedule.html?_r=0

The number of students I worked with increased this year, partly due to more graduate school applicants. My high school students this year are from Saline as well as Ann Arbor, grad school applicants from Michigan and Ohio. It is exciting to hear from my students, telling me of acceptance letters as well as scholarship offers. More schools are considering applications as I write so many students are sure to hear big news before the New Year rings in. Keep me posted on your progress!

I am beginning to look at dates for a free College Application talk in January. You may recall that as a part of my commitment to the Statement of Principles of Good Practice through the National Association for College Admission Counseling (NACAC), I host monthly College Application Talks for students and parents to educate them about the transition to college. Please email me if you have a preference for a date in January or any month/date in 2014, Machiele.m@gmail.com

Wishing you a prosperous 2014!  Michelle

“Our whole family was settling into a new location due to my husband’s job change and our daughter’s college applications were all coming due. Michelle was able to not only fine tune the wording on her essays etc. but more importantly to help her consider the suitable options for her here in Michigan. Having someone outside the family re-enforce our daughter’s strengths was a huge encouragement and helped her aim high.  Finding Michelle was a real answer to prayer!”

Michelle helps …

Michelle helps make the college application process feel much more manageable! She has a very friendly, calming and reassuring presence that can be felt by both parents and students. She is well versed in the pros and cons of different type of colleges (small/large, public/private, etc.) and does a great job in helping students and parents think through what type of school would be a good fit. She also has great suggestions for students on how to best represent themselves on their applications. I highly recommend Michelle and the service she offers!

June – New Beginnings for Seniors and Juniors

June is finally here for the Class of 2013. Congratulations to all of my graduating students. I am so excited for your college plans. Hard work pays off, and you are on your way!

For Junior parents and students, my next College Application Information Session will be June 8, 8:30-10:00 AM. Learn what your family can do this summer to prepare for college applications.

– This time frame is during the ACT test, so will be convenient for many parents.

– Email me to confirm your attendance, machiele.m@gmail.com.

This looks to be a neat gathering of folks. Remember, there is no cost for the group sessions. I have a lot of important information to share, and I anticipate a lively group discussion too.

What an exciting time of year! Looking forward to seeing everyone at graduation parties around town.
